The Vanguard

People on the move,

Escaping drought and war,

Carrying what they can,

Risking themselves,

Their families,

Many dying on the way,

Dogged by government failures,

Greedy smugglers,

Media voyeurs,

Some of them make it to safety,

In spite of everything,

A tragic vanguard,

Of those likely to be displaced,

By severe weather patterns,

Rising seas,

Water too warm for fish,

Crop failures,

And governments

About to collapse.
