Climate change is happening, and we should do everything in our power to change our habits and ways of living. I have seen changes such as more frequent and extreme precipitation events, increasing fires in the west, and the extreme rise in summer temperatures in the Pacific Northwest.

I grew up in a very small town in a river valley along the Delaware River in New Jersey. As a very young child, the river flooded one spring and our home was flooded with a few feet of water on the first floor. A year or so ago, the street I grew up on had water rolling down the street. This time it was due to an extreme precipitation event. Water cascaded down from the hills surrounding the town. Many towns in New Jersey had severe flooding on a scale not seen before.

I think back to the many summers I spent camping and hiking in the West as a young adult. Many of those areas have had to deal with forest fires on a new scale. I also lived in Seattle in the 1980’s. I used to wear a heavy sweater in the morning into the months of June and July. You might wear a light sweater, or rain jacket, for your 4th of July picnic. There was no air conditioning anywhere, and it wasn’t needed. I have been shocked at the extremely high temperatures Seattle, and the Pacific Northwest in general, have experienced in the last summers.

Climate change is here. I have experienced it.
