Browntail Moth and What You Need to Know

On February 1st, 2022, the Belfast Free Library and the Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition hosted this virtual presentation with entomologist Tom Schmeelk.

Browntail moth is a non-native species that poses human health risks as well as concerns for forest health. This species is currently experiencing a population boom in Maine. This presentation covered lifecycle, history, current situation and what to look for as well as management and mitigation strategies. Also discussed: emerald ash borer, one of the more recent threats to Maine’s forest.

Tom Schmeelk is an Entomologist with the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry and the program lead on the browntail moth.
