This piece was made when I was at the Maine Farmland Trust Fiore Residency.
As a BIPOC artist, who is a member of the Cherokee Nation, it is particularly significant to me because this year, due to all of the broken treaties with the Cherokee and the other tribes that were moved to Oklahoma during the “Trail of Tears”, the Federal Courts have ruled that Jurisdictionally the State of Oklahoma is now under tribal jurisdiction.
It will not mean the land will be given back.
It will mean in the future that the tribes will have a “seat at the table” in terms of how the land is used in oil. gas, and mineral extraction.
